Sometimes the walk home can feel like a mountain for little legs - especially after a long day. This game transforms that tired trudge into a playful adventure. Simply announce that you’ve discovered a magical scooter (pretend to ride one!) and describe its special features. Maybe it's rainbow-coloured, shoots lollies when you press a button, or zooms sideways and backwards.
Your child will most likely be motivated to create their own scooter with even wilder powers - wings, horns, invisibility cloaks, or rocket boosters! You can swap ideas back and forth as you "ride" (i.e. have a relaxed walk) alongside each other.
It's a beautiful way to reconnect (especially after being apart after a day of school or preschool), encouraging imagination, laughter, and storytelling - while sneakily making the walk home much more fun for everyone.
None needed - just a walk or space where you can “scoot” side by side.
Announce you’ve found a magical scooter and hop on, pretending to ride.
Describe your scooter’s colours, powers, or surprises in a fun way. E.g. "Guess what! I've got a magical scooter (pretend to ride it) - it's rainbow coloured, and has a special button that pops out a lolly when you press it and it can go in any direction, sideways, backwards - weeee!"
Invite your child to create their own magical scooter with even more amazing features. (They might not even need a prompt and already be telling you how much more amazing their scooter is and why!)
Keep adding silly or imaginative twists - racing sideways, flying through the sky, popping lollies, or zooming to funny destinations.
Ride your scooters all the way home (or until you've both found some calm).
Magical Vehicle Swap: Next time, try magical bikes, roller skates, or flying carpets.
Scooter Races: Pretend race to imaginary finish lines with wacky obstacles along the way.
World Tour: Pretend your scooter can teleport - where in the world (or universe!) does it take you next?
Sound Effects: Add whooshes, beeps, and magical sparkles as you zoom along.
Draw It Later: When you get home, draw or colour pictures of your magical scooters and their special powers.
