Remember those books where you get to choose the storyline at the end of each chapter? Choose Your Own Adventure Day is the real-life version - nothing complicated, and no set plans, just the joy of exploring the everyday with fresh eyes.
You don’t need wild ideas or fancy destinations. Just pick a direction, hop on a train, bus, or in the car, and let the day unfold.
Maybe you end up in a new suburb exploring the high street, or you wander a different walking route near home. If you're with kids, welcome the opportunity to say “show me the way,” or invent a scavenger hunt for things like blue signs or red doors!
When we treat the ordinary like an adventure, our kids pick up on that spark - and we get to enjoy it too. No pressure to entertain, just a playful mindset and space for connection.
Talk about the idea of “choosing your own adventure” before you leave.
Check train, bus, or tram routes if you're catching public transport, and pick a time when you can be relaxed and unhurried
Pack some essentials (nappies, snacks, water, weather-appropriate gear) - if doing it with kids, invite them to help pack the mystery day bag too e.g. with their favourite (light) book or toy
Ride for a few stops (or choose when to get off!)
Explore your surroundings with no particular destination - just curiosity
If adventuring with little ones, invite them to lead the way, notice interesting things, and decide what to do next
Take breaks as needed, grab a snack, sit at a bench, or stop for a treat
Head home when ready - and chat about what you discovered along the way
