Who knew making your own play dough could be so easy and fun? Making it together is a perfect bonus activity to do with your little ones, who'll love mixing, kneading and rolling it.

This recipe can be made taste-safe by baking the flour first, once that's done it's only minutes till ready to play.

The beauty about making your own play dough is you can customise it to your liking. Add colours, spices and scents, glitter (if you dare) or just keep it nice and simple.

We like to use coconut oil for its warming scent and skin-friendliness.

This play dough can keep for about 6 months if wrapped in cling film and stored in an airtight container.

Safety Notice: This activity involves materials or actions that require adult supervision.

Materials

Prep / make

  • Step 1:

Boil the water. If using coconut oil, melt it first. Measure out all the ingredients ahead if you'd like your little to add them in themselves.

  • Step 2:

If you're worried about bacteria and want to make this taste-safe, bake the flour on a lined baking tray first for about 5-10 mins at 180c and let cool before using.

  • Step 3:

Add the dry ingredients and oil to the bowl and mix well.

  • Step 4:

Add a couple of drops of food colouring to the boiling water.

  • Step 5:

Slowly stir the coloured water into the mixture.

  • Step 6:

Once cool, knead till it meets your desired consistency.

  • Step 7:

Tips: Store for up to 6 months in an airtight container.

Play

  • Once cooled, let your little one explore and experiment with the dough using their hands, or other tools like rolling pins, stamps or cookie cutters.

Extend

  • Make it sensory: Top it up with herbs, spices, glitter or flowers for an extra sensory experience, e.g. cinnamon, basil, lavender, cardamom, cocoa powder, vanilla extract

  • Treasure Hunt Dig: Hide small toys, beads, or buttons inside a lump of play dough and let your child squish and dig to find them. Perfect for little hands to work on fine motor skills!

  • Play Dough Construction: Give your little one straws, toothpicks, or dry pasta to build 3D structures. They can create towers, bridges, or even wobbly creatures!
