Pause and reflect together by sharing a rose, a bud, and a thorn. A simple conversation game that encourages gratitude, growth, and meaningful connection.

"Rose, Bud, Thorn" game

Slow down and reconnect with this simple reflection ritual called "Rose, Bud, Thorn."

Each person takes turns sharing three things:

🌹 Rose: Something you're proud of or something that went well. 🌱 Bud: Something you're looking forward to or excited about. 🌵 Thorn: Something you found challenging or hope can go better next time.

There are no right or wrong answers, and everyone can share as much or as little as they feel comfortable. Some days the responses are thoughtful and reflective, while other days they spark laughter, storytelling, or unexpected conversations.

This gentle check-in creates space to celebrate wins, acknowledge challenges without judgement, and look ahead with optimism. It can become a lovely ritual at the dinner table, before bed, on a walk, or during a long car ride.

For children, this activity supports emotional literacy, self-awareness, communication, and perspective-taking. For grownups, it offers an opportunity to pause, reflect on the day, and connect more deeply with the people around them.

Like many of the best connection rituals, "Rose, Bud, Thorn" doesn't require any preparation, just a few minutes of genuine conversation.

(You can also try out a similar reflection game with an extra dash of silliness)

Play

  • Step 1:

Take turns sharing your Rose - something you're proud of or something positive from your day.

  • Step 2:

Share your Bud - something you're looking forward to or excited about.

  • Step 3:

Share your Thorn - something that was challenging or that you hope can go better next time.

(We usually like to do this one second, ending with a positive bud, but this is up to you!)

Extend

  • One Word Version: Challenge everyone to answer each prompt using just one word.

  • Draw It: Instead of talking, draw your rose, bud, and thorn.

  • Walk and Talk: Play while on a family walk or during a picnic.

  • Reflection Journal: Write or sketch your responses to look back on over time.

  • Follow-Up Questions: Ask gentle questions like "What helped make that your rose?" or "How can we help with your thorn?"
