Learning letters or phonics doesn’t have to mean flashcards! With Lego letters (or whatever construction toy you have on hand), kids can build the alphabet themselves - one block at a time.
Start with uppercase or lowercase letters, or spell out their name. As they snap together bricks, they’re also strengthening their fine motor control and spatial awareness.
Want to extend the play? Trace the finished letters onto paper to create templates for colouring, copying, or matching games. You can even use the letter shapes to stamp into playdough.
A great one for preschoolers and school kids. Simple, satisfying, and so much more engaging than worksheets!
Gather your pile of bricks.
Decide which letters to build - start with a few or go all the way to Z! (their name or something that matches their interests usually works well)
If using, have paper and a marker nearby for tracing.
Build individual letters using Lego / Duplo pieces. Or lay out blocks on the floor.
Depending on their stage, you can let your child experiment by themselves, or guide them on how to form each letter shape with the bricks.
Optionally, trace the finished letters to create guides for future play or matching.
Let them explore, copy, and build their own combinations or whole words.
Name Game: Start by building the letters in your child’s name or a friend's to spark their interest
Colour Challenge: Build each letter using only one colour or a pattern of colours
Trace & Match: Trace letters onto paper, mix them up, and match Lego letters to the outlines.
Sensory Stamp: Press Lego letters into playdough or kinetic sand for an added sensory layer.
Number version: Try this with numbers too. You can even make symbols and practice some simple maths.
