Some of the best play ideas and toys are the simplest ones. And the humble cardboard box is the hero of our logo for exactly that reason!
With just a cardboard box and some art supplies, you can create a self-contained little art studio for your little ones (and maybe even get 10 minutes to yourself while you're at it).
This activity is brilliant for independent play. Set out a few materials like washable markers, paint sticks or stickers next to a cardboard box (bonus if it’s big enough to sit in!), and let them go wild decorating it however they like.
If they need help getting started, use playful prompts like:
“Can you turn this into a delivery van for Rainbow Land?”
“This box looks like a spaceship that needs lots of buttons and colours before take-off!”
“Can you fill the squiggly lines with stickers?”
It’s low-mess, low-prep, and gives them a creative outlet using recycled materials. Definitely a favourite here.
Place the cardboard box in a safe, open area and set out a selection of decorating materials within reach.
Invite your child to decorate the box however they like.
Use playful prompts to spark ideas if needed.
Sit nearby while they explore independently or join in to kick things off, then step away when they’re engaged.
Build a theme: Turn it into a vehicle, house, shop or animal den depending on their interests
Add inside play: Let them climb in or fill it with soft toys for more imaginative fun.
Cut out windows or doors: Turn the box into a little hideaway or puppet stage to keep the play going.
