Object match puzzle
Trace around everyday objects on paper, then match each item to its outline.
This activity turns everyday items into a simple but satisfying puzzle. All you need is a few objects from around the house - think utensils, toys, blocks, or tools - and something to trace with.
It’s an easy win for calm, independent play. Kids love the challenge of matching each object to the outline, and you’ll love how quick it is to set up. Bonus: it sneaks in shape recognition and early spatial awareness.
Materials
Prep
Step 1:
Gather a handful of safe, recognisable objects.
Step 2:
Place each one on a sheet of paper and trace around it with a pencil or marker.
Step 3:
Lay out the paper and scatter the objects nearby.
Play
Step 1:
Invite your child to match the items to their outlines.
Step 2:
Let them test and place each one, adjusting and puzzling it out.
Step 3:
Mix it up by swapping objects or tracing new ones!
Extend
Category challenge: Group items by type: e.g. kitchen tools, soft vs hard, wooden vs plastic.
Turn it into art: When they're done, let them use the outlines to create their own imaginative scene or characters (e.g. monsters)
Reverse Roles: Let them find objects to trace around for you to match up
