Looking for a simple way to bring some creativity and sensory play together? Grab a tub of play dough and a few favourite figurines or objects with unique shapes.
This activity lets kids press their toys into the dough, revealing footprints, patterns, or shapes that spark imagination and storytelling.
It’s a fun way to explore cause and effect, notice details, and experiment with texture. They can imagine animal trails, create scenes, or design a “doughy” landscape for their toys to explore!
Set out a clean play space with a smooth surface for easy pressing and pattern-making.
Roll out the play dough to create a flat surface.
Show your child how to press a figurine or object into the dough to make a print.
Encourage them to try different toys or objects and experiment with the impressions they leave.
Pattern Hunt: After making prints, ask them to match each print to its toy, promoting observation skills.
Clay Casting: Try using air-dry clay instead of play dough for permanent prints. Once dry, kids can paint the “fossils” and keep them as mementos.
Treasure Hunt: Hide tiny objects (like beads or gems) in the play dough, then make prints on top to “map out” where they’re hidden. Kids can explore their map and dig out treasures as they go.
