Make fun painted art using masking tape to create shapes, letters or designs with a surprise reveal.

Tape resist art

A fun twist for your next painting session. All you need is paper, some masking tape, and your choice of paint or colouring tools.

You create a design using tape - maybe a letter, a birthday number, a heart, or just some random lines - then paint right over it. Once the paint is dry, peel the tape back and reveal your masterpiece!

It’s a great way to turn art into a mini event, especially for kids who love surprises. You can turn the finished piece into a personalised card, name sign, or just admire the satisfying contrast between the coloured sections and crisp white lines underneath.

Best of all, it’s open-ended, easy to customise to their interests, and surprisingly calming for all ages.

Materials

Prep / make

  • Step 1:

Use tape to create a design on the paper - shapes, initials, zigzags, etc.

  • Step 2:

Press down firmly to avoid paint seeping underneath.

Play

  • Step 1:

Invite your child to paint over the entire page, tape and all.

  • Step 2:

    Let it dry completely.

  • Step 3:

Peel back the tape to reveal the hidden design!

Extend

  • Birthday card magic: Use it to make handmade birthday cards or gift wrap.

  • Texture play: Try dabbing with sponges or cotton balls for different effects.
