There’s something irresistible about an empty box filled with soft fabric strips. Babies and toddlers love the satisfying tug of pulling out one piece after another - and often stuffing them back in again! It’s a simple, low-prep sensory activity that builds fine motor skills, encourages curiosity, and demonstrates cause & effect all while supporting early problem-solving.
If you don't have an empty tissue box, you can cut a hole in any box you have lying around.
For the fabrics - you can...
Cut or gather soft, baby-safe fabric pieces and stuff them into an empty tissue box or wipes container. Make sure nothing is too long or easily tangled.
Place the box in front of your baby or toddler. Let them explore pulling the fabrics out and stuffing them back in. Name colours, textures, or count the pieces as they go. Supervise closely for safety.
Add surprise textures: Include different fabric types (smooth, rough, crinkly) to explore new sensory experiences.
Surprise toys: Tuck in soft toys or safe household objects for them to discover as they pull.
The long one: Just for fun and their surprise, tie all the fabrics together to make one long multicoloured scarf to pull out.
