The humble paper boat is a timeless craft that turns a single sheet of paper into a floating toy in just a few folds! Perfect for puddles, bathtubs, or kitchen sink regattas, this activity builds fine motor skills, patience and mindfulness (and is sure to make your inner child come out to play too)!
Here are the detailed instructions (refer to video below too):
Step 1: Start with an A4 or rectangular paper. Fold it in half lengthwise.
Step 2: Fold in half again widthwise, then open it back up.
Step 3: Fold the top corners down to meet at the middle line to make a triangle top.
Step 4: Fold the bottom edge up on both sides.
Step 5: Open into a diamond and tuck flaps behind the triangle points.
Step 6: Fold bottom corners up to meet each other to make a small triangle.
Step 7: Open and flatten into a diamond.
Step 8: Pull top points outward to form the boat shape.
Step 9: Float and play!
Gather one sheet of paper per boat.
Expand the description above (and check the video) for detailed steps on how to fold your boat.
Follow the fold sequence above to create a boat.
Decorate it if you like.
Float your boat in a tub, sink, or puddle!
Boat race: Compete to see whose boat sails fastest in a water tray or gutter.
Boat designer: Decorate with flags, sails, or different colours using markers, pencils or stickers.
Cargo test: Add small objects (beads, paperclips) and see how much the boat can carry.
Science experiment: Test different paper types to see which float longer.
Puddle Patrol: Take your boats outside after the rain.
