This quick and easy setup uses masking or painter’s tape to create a pretend bridge between two surfaces - like chairs or boxes.
The magic isn’t just in the tape and sticks, though - it’s in the play invitation! Adding a toy with a “mission” (like their favourite toy needing help to cross) transforms this into a storytelling challenge that can spark loads of independent pretend play.
You can build the bridge together or leave it as an open invitation with materials nearby for them to...
Place two sturdy surfaces side by side with a gap between them.
Stretch tape across to create a sticky bridge.
Stick down firmly. Leave materials nearby or build part of the bridge to get them started.
Let your child explore laying planks across the tape and playing with the materials in open-ended ways.
Prompt a story or toy rescue: “Can you help Bluey get across?”
Rescue mission: Add toys that need rescuing from one side - e.g. “Bluey’s stuck! Can you build a way to get her across?”. Maybe some toy vehicles will help too?
Toy parade: Challenge them to let as many of their favourite toys cross the bridge and line them up across it
Rainbow bridge: If you have pom poms, pour a bunch out for them to stick across the bridge to make it colourful. You can challenge them to choose specific colours or create patterns.
