With just a cardboard tube, cling wrap, tape, markers, and a torch, kids can make their very own projector.
Draw a design or character on the cling wrap, attach it to the tube’s end, shine a torch through it, and watch the image project onto a wall or ceiling.
This activity introduces the basics of light, shadows, and projection in a fun and engaging way. You can experiment with distance, angles, and layering multiple designs to see how the projections change.
It’s a simple, low-cost craft-ivity and perfect for encouraging curiosity around STEM concepts, creativity, and problem-solving!
Gather all materials on a table or tray.
Cut a piece of cling wrap slightly larger than the tube’s end.
Find a wall or flat surface to project onto.
Keep markers, tape, and torch within easy reach for quick access during play.
Tape the cling wrap securely over one end of the cardboard tube, making sure there are no wrinkles for the light to refract.
Draw a design or character on the cling wrap. The bolder the mark the better - we find Sharpies work really well.
Shine the torch through the open end onto the wall or ceiling.
Experiment with distance, angles, and different drawings to see how projections change.
Take turns creating new designs and projecting them.
Colour Fun: Add coloured markers or layers to make vibrant projections.
Story Time: Project characters or scenes to create a mini story theatre.
Science Exploration: Experiment with shadows by placing objects between the torch and wall.
Angle Challenge: Change the tube angle or distance to see how it affects size and sharpness.
Mini Cinema: Combine multiple tubes for multi-character projection shows.
